I had my first flight of 2014 yesterday. It was impromptu and it just happened that I had a last minute driver, so we got to launch at Baldy a little after 5:00 pm. The clouds looked great other than a couple of big ones that blotted out all of King Eddy with shadow as soon as we got there: so of course it was releasing a few nice clean cycles while I got ready, and they were dying off once I had run through my gear and had everything in place. Moderate wind made for a nice takeoff with a few seconds of easy groundhandling.

I soared the top briefly before the breeze died for a few moments and I started sinking. Heading for the lower launch and towards a small shred of cloud I saw a crow circling up and headed over to where I imagined his lift to be. It wasn't much but I turned in .2-.3 m/s for a few minutes before died off again and I went on a search upwind and toward the LZ. A little jiggle in the wing and I had a nice smooth .8 m/s core for another minute or so and gained some altitude again before it died off; after a winter of being grounded it felt awesome.

I had a few blips and bumps here and there but the breath was gone out of the valley for the moment, although the sun was coming back in as I came down to land. A smooth landing in the snow and sun felt great too and then we chatted in the LZ for a bit to catch up. It wasn't any kind of epic, but a nice 20 minute cruise off of King Eddy on a day when I didn't expect anything other than a sled ride was a perfect first flight of the year!

I hope everybody is stoked on the coming Flying Year: Feel free to tag your First Flight of the Year onto this thread, with or without pics.

Speaking of pics, mine are courtesy of Chelsea Brisco and Doug Nitchie. Thanks guys!
