Description of launch:
Excellent grassy slopes. Great HG tandem site. The upper SE and E launch is an excellent early morning site,
but the glide out is lengthy, you are launching at the center top of a long wide ravine and rotor and
venturi effects can be troublesome, several pilots both HG and PG have been forced down on the slopes of the ravine.

Launch Road Name & Directions:
Kobau Lookout Rd. turnoff is 11 km west of Osoyoos on the road to Keremeos.
a) LOWER LAUNCH at 3650' (south facing) is 7.7 km up on the road look for a cut bank and hike up 20' to launch
b) The south 6000' launch is a 1 km hike up to the Lookout Tower from the first parking lot at the top.
It is very rocky and not used much as you can get up on a south wind from lower launch.
c) South East Launch at 5810' is the main launch and a great morning site.
Turn right at the Kobau look out parking lot / forestry campground. 100m past the lake, turn right onto the circle road into launch.
Don't drive on the Alpine Meadows.Walk down to the launches. The HG launch is obvious - over an old road cut.
The other PG / HG launch (best) is 50m north through a small grove of trees.
d) There is a HG / PG South West launch at 5700' turn right at the parking lot and turn left up to the tower.
- a 2 minute hike down to the knob NW of the Tower.
e) West HG Launch at 5900' same access as above is 100 feet due west of the Tower above the road cut in sage brush.
f) A 2 km hike out the west ridge plateau leads to a large PG launch at 5000's
- The bomb out LZ for these westerly launches is at the Nighthawk Station road turnoff (heading south to the old US customs office).
g) A several Km hike and or drive to the north along the east ridge leads to another easterly grassy slope PG launch,
not in the park, overlooking the Oliver-Cawston Rd. See Photo Below

Soaring Information and Weather Notes:
For your HAGAR Canadian Airspace information, see: http://www3.telus.net/cschwab/viewer/ca ... space.html

The conditions can be strong from April till September, getting mild but still nice thermals in mid October.
When valley wind get strong then beginners stick to mornings and evenings and go groundhandling.

Times to Fly - lower launch: all day,
Upper East Launch: Excellent early morning to mid afternoon.
W / SW upper launches are only used if unpleasantly surprised by winds at the east launch.

The 30th annual Mt. Kobau Star Party will begin at dusk August 03, 2013 and will end at dawn August 11, 2013

Description of LZ: DO NOT land in crops.
a) Oliver Airport Important: HG & PG set up on the West side of the airport and land on the grass strip south of the airport.
Planes set up on the East and land on the runway. HG & PG pilots must look out for other aircraft.
Below 2000' agl, stay on the West Side of the runway. DO NOT CROSS TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY.
b) There is a bomb out LZ directly below the SE launch. If you are going to land there get permission first.
Best to use the large fields north of Osoyoos Lake, south of Deadman's Lake (? it's more of a pond) alongside the highway.
c) Lower South launch: Land beside the corral at 2250' the Kobau Lookout Rd. turnoff.
GPS: N 4905 276 W 119 36 070 Embankments cause turbulence in winds.
NOTE: Stop and assess the LZ as new Fences have drastically cut down the field size, though you can still land along the dirt road.
d) Alternate LZ's at the N end of Osoyoos Lake (miles long and wide)
e) for the west launch in a scrub field at the road turnoff for the Nighthawk border crossing station.
