Location: 6 miles east of Vernon North of Hwy 6 and King Eddy.
- Okanagan Valley in South Central British Columbia, Canada.

Vehicle Requirements: 2WD.

Description of Launch: Good grassy slopes.
a) Main launch is in the centre of the clearing below the road is a very flat launch used in SW winds. Lift band starts at the large trees out in front.
This most commonly used S - SW Launch is 100m east of the S Launch.

b) Central launch immediately down the tree line just as you drive into the the clearing is used in South wind conditions.

c) The South West launch is similar to Baldy Launch with a steep slop over the SW facing ravine. It is best Launch in West winds and in light wind conditions.
Turn right onto the road which branches off the final road section into launch. At 100 meters take the left fork and then immediately turn right 50 m to the launch parking area.
Finding launch can be difficult - go with a local pilot the first time or print out these directions.

Launch Road Name and Directions:
2.4 km East of the Lavington Shell turn North on the Noble Canyon Forestry access road (hidden among large trees).
Mark this as 0 km. At the 3.0 km mark take a left fork at the 3.9 km mark go straight ahead. At the 4.4 km mark take the left fork (Becker Lake Rd).
At the 10.6 km go straight ahead (this is the Lavington South Launch turnoff.)

Option 1. At the 13.5 km mark take the left (South) fork under down the Hydro line clearing. At the 13.8 km mark there is a steep drop down to a 5 way intersection. Take the left fork 0.4 km into launch.
(The road down to the Light Wind/West launch is halfway through the trees.)

High clearance vehicle is better at times due to occasional washouts.

The three Launches, again:
1. Take the first right on the access road 100m to the nicely sloped SW launch.
2. When you burst out of the trees into the clearing, the S launch is a 100 m hike slightly downhill.
3. Drive 100 m east to the main, shallow SW launch.

Soaring Information and Weather Notes:
Excellent high flight site with excellent large LZ's,
OSA recommends this site for high flights, novice and rusty pilots, It is a terrific place to learn ridge soaring, thermal and XC skills.

The mountain is rectangular with four faces to work.
1. The south face in light to strong south to SW winds has decent thermals. It is uncommon to get more than a 1000' over the south face - its really good novice - intermediate air. House Thermals are:
a) in front of launch;
b) better house thermals can be found close to the ridge over the ravine which faces south westerly, just don't go as far back as the major power lines where you risk venturie effect and sinking out into trouble.
c) If conditions are too scratchy, slide east a couple of Km to Lavington launch area where thermals can boom, especially spring time.
Above Lavington ridge you can benefit from lee side thermals coming up from the saw toothed ridge behind its launch and things get even better.

2. The west face of Vernon Mt. is outstanding in west or light to nil wind conditions after 2 PM. Light wave flying is common here. :D
The best thermals are found on the north half of the west facing ridge, from the ravine north. This particular area has some of the nicest air in the valley.
To get there, launch off the south side, get high enough to get safely over the ravine and you'll commonly get to 8000' for the whole afternoon.

3. The North face is fun, pleasant flying in N - NW winds.

4. The East face is Lumby - where Coopers Launch is. Going XC to Lumby, there is a great house thermal well out from the south point of the ridge SW of Lumby.

SIte Hazards:
1. The large, deep, long ravine to the west of launch can have venturi effect in any winds.
2. Three can be big sink over the island of trees immediately below and to the left of launch.
3. Vernon Mt's south slope is shallow. It can be challenging to penetrate in strong winds.

Description Of LZ:
1. The large fields at the base of the mountain where the roads T intersection of Buchannon and Ricardo Roads. These vary each year with crops so contact the locals first.
2. The King Edward "glide contest" LZ on the South side of highway 6, just south of the Gravel pit.

Cut fields are OK to land in.
Coldstream Ranch owns launch AND every LZ in the valley below.

FYI: Coldstream Ranch has always requested us to land in fields that do not have cattle.

If you absolutely have to land in a field with cattle, pick a large area completely devoid of potential Sunday dinners. Don't worry about long walkouts. Just get out quickly - others will help if need be. (Its calving season in spring, and yes, some of those fields are full of bulls, not cows so step lively.)

Some of the largest fields have been plowed and planted with corn. In an emergency, its OK to land on the roads in there while the crop is low.

Landing Road Name and Direction:
1. Cropped fields at the intersection of Buchannon and Ricardo Roads.
OSA donated a flag to Tim Ovens, who lives on the east side of the Ricardo Road, just south of the intersection.
2. The east downwind Alt Lz is across the road from Yosef Podanowski's house at 7721 Buchanan Rd Coldstream BC V1B 3B8.
OSA donated a flag to Yosef Podanowski's neighbour, who lives on the north side of Buchanon Rd just west of Yosef's house.
3. The "glide contest" LZ is at King Edward Lz on the South side of the Highway, just south of the gravel pit.

Do Not Land in fields with crops or Cattle. Do not break or stretch fences. Do not leave any garbage!

Other Information:
To fly this site Must also have valid HPAC insurance which requires that you have signed the HPAC Waiver.

The Lavington to Mable Lake to Cherryville area is encompassed in CYA 122 (A) (H) (Aerobatics and Hang Gliding Advisory Airspace) with a ceiling of 6,200" ASL. Be aware when above 6,200" ASL. Commercial jets using Fuel Saving GPS approaches into Canada's 9th busiest airport at Kelowna may be on final glide from a long way away.
Canadian Aviation Law states that all flights above 6,200" ASL in the valley require you to have your HAGAR and to have filed your Flight Itinerary with FIC each day.

The Ranch has been excellent for the last 30 yrs about us using it's property and we as a local club would love to make this site a permanent thing.
The ranch however is concerned about liability issues and does not want anyone flying there without having signed a waiver and without HPAC insurance or without having contacted a local club member for orientation.

Any schools, competitions or tandem pilots that intend to operate here must contact Glenn Derouin or failing him, a local club member.
Remuneration is expected by the Ranch from any commercial activities (tandems, schools, competition) on Coldstream Ranch property.

There are many BC Recreation (Camping) Sites in the Vernon area, with some of the nicest farther up the King Edward Lake Rd.
- take the right hand fork instead of turning left to go to Baldy (King Eddie) Launch.


The Becker Lake Rec Site, immediately behind Vernon Mt. Launch is very, very nice.
- stay on the main road instead of turning left on the rough road into launch (under the powerlines up top on the flats)
... and carry along another couple of kilometers. There are two separate camp grounds on Becker Lake.
